2023 Gem of a Season lineup announced

The Ozark Mountain Daredevils will perform July 7 at the Crystal Theatre in Crystal Falls. The members of the band, from left, front, are Ruell Chappell, Molly Healey and Michael Supe Granda; back, Ron Gremp, Dave Painter, Bill Jones, Nick Sibley, Kelly Brown and John Dillon. Reserved seating tickets for the show will be available soon.

CRYSTAL FALLS — It’s still a new year, but Crystal Theatre in Crystal Falls is ready to announce its lineup of entertainment for March through October.

Once again an eight-event Gem of a Season package is offered at a bargain price and for the first time, a four-event “Mini Gem” package is available for half price.

In addition to Gem Season events, four additional shows and a legend concert by The Ozark Mountain Daredevils complete the season.

The Founding introduces the season Friday, March 3. A progressive folk band from Kalamazoo, the six young musicians strive to balance tradition and innovation.

The first event in the Gem series is The Way Down Wanderers, scheduled for Friday, March 31. Ranked No. 1 of 10 New Artists You Need To Know by Rolling Stone Country 2019 Official Showcase, the group combines “nu bluegrass,” roots-pop melodies with gutsy earthbound lyrics.

The second Gem event Friday, April 21, brings stand-up comedy to the stage. Karen Morgan, a former trial attorney, began her professional comedy as a finalist on Nickelodeon Television’s “Search for the Funniest Mom in America.”

On Sunday, May 7, bassist, composer and bandleader Dave Sharp leads the Worlds Quartet. With unique instrumentation, the group lends rhythms, sounds, and textures from across the globe.

Crystal Theatre honors Memorial Weekend on Saturday, May 27, with a musical dramatic presentation titled “War Bonds: The Songs and Letters of World War II.” The multi-media cabaret is sprinkled with personal letters from the front lines and headline news of the time.

The first week of summer break from school, Missoula Children’s Theater comes to town with a production of “The Little Mermaid.” Partially funded by MCACA, students in first through 12th grades will rehearse from June 5-10 for two weekend performances.

The Gem series continues Friday, June 23, with Michigan I-O. A quartet of stringed instrumentalists present a collection of forgotten folk songs from the Great Lakes region, re-imagined in a contemporary style. They perform the largest single collection of folk music and storytelling tradition from Michigan’s early statehood.

The climax of the season arrives as summer reaches its peak — perfect timing for Crystal Theatre’s Legend concert. This year, the spotlight on nationally-known musicians beams on The Ozark Mountain Daredevils on Friday, July 7. Formed in 1972 in Springfield, Mo., the popular American rock band is widely known for its singles “If You Wanna Get to Heaven” and “Jackie Blue.”

Back by popular demand, the Blooze Brothers return to the stage Friday, July 21. With two high-energy front-men — the antics of the infamous Blues Brothers — a dynamic female lead singer, and some of Chicago’s top musicians, the 11-piece band promises to bring another memorable musical experience to Crystal Theatre.

As the days of summer wane, Mustard’s Retreat presents “Music to cure what ails you” Saturday, Aug. 19. The charming, witty duo has been delighting audiences for more than 40 years with tales that spark laughter and surface memories.

During Fungus Fest weekend, Saturday, Aug. 26, Crystal Theatre welcomes The Journey. Five top metro-Detroit area musicians compose the ultimate tribute band that faithfully recaptures the thrill that generations of Journey fans remember.

The final Gem concert Friday, Sept. 8, presents Fourever Fab. For more than 20 years, Fourever Fab and its founding members have been performing the hits of the Beatles. Fourever Fab strives to keep the magical musical mania created by the Fab Four alive forever.

A unique bonus concert Sunday, Oct. 1, completes the 2023 season. Raised in Ukraine, educated in Russia, and emigrated to the U.S., Igor Yuzov formed a band with Russian friends known as Red Elvises. The eclectic group has toured the past 20 years, taking their “Siberian Surf Rock” from the streets of Santa Monica, Calif., across the globe.

Both eight-event and four-event Gem Season ticket packages are available at a discounted price through Tuesday. Individual tickets for any shows can also be accessed online at thecrystaltheatre.org or at Stage Left next to the theatre.

Tickets for The Ozark Mountain Daredevils (reserved seating) will be for sale soon.
