Maryhill, U.P. Rehab Services teaming up to provide care

NIAGARA, Wis. – Maryhill of Niagara has announced that they have teamed up with a new, innovative therapy team as of Jan. 1.

Maryhill is now working with U.P. Rehab Services, which provides physical, occupational, aquatic, and speech therapy in the U.P.

U.P. Rehab Services are provided in 11 nursing centers, nine outpatient clinics and three hospital partnerships in eight U.P. counties and now in Marinette County with the addition of Maryhill. Hospital partnerships include Marquette General Hospital, which is now operating as U.P. Health Systems, Munising Memorial, and Bell.

In a 2011 article, MGH described the partnership in this way, “Marquette General Hospital is partnering with a local, privately-owned business, U.P. Rehab Services, to improve the delivery of rehabilitation services to patients. Outpatient rehabilitation services will no longer be offered at Marquette General Hospital. Instead, the partnership will form Marquette General Therapies and it will be offered in various locations across the U.P. including Negaunee, Gwinn, and Escanaba.”

Eric Paulitch, occupational therapist, commented that resident satisfaction and input is very important to the Maryhill therapist team, so they talked with a couple of the residents to get some input.

“I enjoy going to therapy and getting my exercise. I look forward to going and visiting with the therapists,” noted resident Mary “Tootsie” Markham.

Resident Betty Ring said, “I feel like I am getting stronger. Sometimes they push me pretty hard and I get tired but I know it helps me get stronger.”

“They worked with me to help me get strong enough to go back home. They were good to work with. I am going home,” added resident Jerry Mortier.

All three residents participated in a variety of therapies several times each day in an effort to regain strength to enable them to meet their goals.

DeAnn Windell, physical therapist assistant, shared that she became interested in being a PTA when her youngest daughter needed PT as an infant.

“I saw the compassion in the therapist and I knew PTA was a great career choice. I enjoy people and find it very rewarding getting others back to function. I truly enjoy working in a skilled nursing facility,” Windell said.

“The team is 100 percent aligned with Maryhill’s approach for putting the resident’s goals first. While everyone knows Maryhill as providing excellent long-term care (voted People’s Choice Best Nursing Home in 2014 and 2015), our partnership with U.P. Rehab Services moves us one step closer to our goal of being the preferred short-term rehabilitation provider in the area,” added Joan Roehrig, Maryhill administrator.
