Neurosurgeon joins UPHS Brain and Spine team

MARQUETTE – Dr. Sonia Geschwindt, board eligible in neurological surgery and internal medicine, has joined the U.P. Health System Brain and Spine Center. She begins practice today in Marquette.

Dr. Geschwindt comes from Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pa., where she has worked since 2008.

In June, Dr. Geschwindt completed a Skull Base Oncology Fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

Her academic qualifications include:

-2015: Skull base oncology Fellow, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

– 2014: Neurosurgery Resident, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

– 2013: Enfolded Endoscopic Fellow, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

– 2009: General Surgery Intern, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

– 2008: Saint Louis University School of Medicine, St. Louis, Mo.. Doctor of Medicine, Cum laude

– 2004: University of Bridgeport, Bridgeport, Conn. Bachelor of Science in biology & minor in mathematics, summa cum laude

She is a member of numerous associations including the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Geschwindt presents to her peers frequently at Neurological Surgeons meetings.

In addition, she taught at Thomas Jefferson University School of Medicine during surgical rotation and stood out with her awards and honors.

“Sonia elevates our Neurosurgical and Neuro-oncology services further. She has particular expertise in minimally invasive brain surgery and the treatment of cancer involving the brain and spine,” noted Dr. Craig Coccia, Brain and Spine Center medical staff director.

” Dr. Geshwindt will assume the clinical leadership of the brain tumor research center continuing the national level work begun by Dr. Rovin and the outstanding research team at NMU,” Dr. Cocia added

“We are so pleased that Dr. Geschwindt will be joining our medical team. We look forward to both her and her husband being part of our community. We are particularly excited at the expertise Dr. Geschwindt adds to our Neurosurgical team in the Brain and Spine Center, and the ability to serve our patients who require this service,” added Frances Finley, regional director of UPHS clinical administration.”

“I am excited to join a community and I can serve and my family can grow into. The rigorous training I received will be put to use to better the lives of our patients,” Dr. Geschwindt said.
