Truck takes out power to Escanaba restaurants

ESCANABA — Electricity was expected to be restored this morning to three Escanaba restaurants that lost power when a truck struck and broke a nearby utility pole Monday afternoon, according to police and electric officials.

The 23-year-old driver, from Gladstone, remains in the Delta County Jail on accusations of drugged driving after the 3:30 p.m. accident on the 2200 block of First Avenue North, affecting the Wendy’s Hudson’s and Elmer’s restaurants. He is expected to be officially charged in Delta County District Court today.

The truck was traveling west, possibly at a high speed, on First Avenue North near North 22nd Street where it hit a legally parked vehicle, careened to the south and struck the utility pole, according to Escanaba Public Safety.

The vehicle ended up on the driver’s side with the driver trapped inside, according to police, with the snapped-off upper portion of the utility pole on top of the truck.

The driver, once freed from the vehicle, refused medical treatment from Rampart Emergency Medical Services personnel.

He was taken to Escanaba Public Safety for a sobriety evaluation and then arrested for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs.
