HOUGHTON — Authorities in Houghton are investigating a body found Saturday afternoon floating in the Portage Canal near Kestner Waterfront Park.

Two people walking the trail on Lakeshore Drive noticed the body about 1:50 p.m. in the water between the city dock and shore, according to the Houghton County Sheriff’s Department.

The body appears to be a male but had no identification. It was taken to UP Portage Health Systems for examination, the sheriff’s office reported.

Because the body was found in the canal, the Houghton County Sheriff’s Department will handle the investigation. Further information will be released after the medical examiner’s report is completed.
