KINGSFORD — Kingsford High School was recently recognized by the state of Michigan Green Schools Organization as one of the only Green Schools in the Upper Peninsula.

Schools in the state of Michigan can be designated as a Green School through their commitment to environmental stewardship.

The Environmental Club at Kingsford High School has committed itself to making the Kingsford High School community environmentally better, a club spokeswoman said.

They have initiated recycling at the high school, worked with the food service department on waste free lunches, worked the building and grounds department on energy savings programs, working with science teacher and club adviser Brian Olson on alternative energy programs (solar panels), and worked with science teacher and adviser Bob Martonen and the Environmental Science class on hosting environmental speakers in class and coordinating environmental field trips and education on water quality and water shed.

The application for Green School recognition was coordinated by KHS Environmental Club members Katherine Mentel and Gabrielle Nordstrom along with guidance from science teachers Olson and Martonen.
