Kingsford High School names top 10 percent

KINGSFORD — Twelve seniors at Kingsford High School have been named to the top 10 percent of their graduating class, school officials announced.

Students received grade point averages ranging from 4.0 to 4.153 and include Cory Cootware, Heather Harris, Kaitlyn Hicks, Mallory Jayne, Alissa Kainrath, Marcus Maraccini, Katherine Mentel, Owen Petschar, Alek Shanks, Allison Sparpana, Caroline To and Rebecca To.

Cory Cootware is the son of Robert and Julie Cootware.

School activities: Football, basketball, track and National Honor Society

Community activities: Little Dribbler 3-on-3 volunteer, member of Dickinson County Racing Association and Midwestern Sports Car Council, member of Quinnesec United Methodist Church, and race at late model and thunder roadster

Honors: Academic Letter and Bar, National Merit Scholarship Finalist, AP Calculus Student of the Month, AP Statistics Student of the Month, NWTC Tech Challenge for Welding — Star First Award

His future plans are to attend Ferris State University for welding engineering technology.

Heather Harris is the daughter of Robert and Kim Harris.

School activities: Tennis and National Honor Society.

Community Activities: Volunteer for Faith Formation Catechist, Knights of Columbus, VA Bingo and Fish Fry, Vacation Bible School and Girl Scouts

Honors: Academic Letter and Bar, AP Calculus Student of the Month, and Pre-Engineering and Robotics Student of the Semester.

Her future plans are to attend Michigan Technological University for electrical engineering technology.

Kaitlyn Hicks is the daughter of James and Barbara Hicks.

School activities: National Honor Society Secretary, Key Club, Business Professionals of America, tennis and softball.

Community activities: Youth Leader Vacation Bible School crew leader.

Honors: Academic Letter and Bar, AP Chemistry Student of the Month, 2015 and 2016 Division I Girls Tennis U.P. Player of the Year, and U.S. Army Pro Football Hall of Fame Award for Excellence finalist.

She plans to attend Michigan Technological University for chemical engineering.

Mallory Jayne is the daughter of Nancy Jayne and Robert Jayne.

School activities: National Honor Society, Key Club, KHS-O, soccer, Environmental Club and after-school tutoring.

Community activities: Big Red Barn, Frosty 5K, Tour de Dickinson, Red Cross blood drive, Bay College Children’s Night.

Honors: Academic Letter and Bar, All A’s for seven semesters, Detroit News Outstanding Student Award, Michigan Tech Women in Engineering, and Zonta Tall Ships Women in Science.

Her plans include attending Michigan Technological University for mechanical engineering.

Alissa Kainrath is the daughter of Melinda Frey and Thomas Johns and Scott and Mary Kainrath.

School activities: Golf MVP, SADD president, National Honor Society, drama secretary, student council historian and Key Club.

Community Activities: More than 400 community service volunteer hours, volunteered for the Frosty 5K, Vacation Bible School, and Special Olympics Bowling.

Honors: Academic Letter and Bar, AP Chemistry Student of the Month, AP Literature Student of the Month, AP Calculus Student of the Month, AP History Student of the Month and Michigan Service Award.

Future plans are to attend Michigan State University for pre-med.

Marcus Maraccini is the son of Patrick and Janet Maraccini.

School activities: Football, track, baseball, basketball, wrestling, junior class secretary, Key Club secretary, marching band, Environmental Club and National Honor Society.

Community activities: American Martyrs altar server, and 200 community service volunteer hours.

Honors: Academic Letter and Bar, Daily News Student of the Week, Football Division 5 All-State Team, GNC Offensive Lineman of the Year and All-UP Dream Team.

His future plans are to attend Michigan Technological University for computer engineering.

Katherine Mentel is the daughter of Carolyn Mentel and Scott Mentel.

School activities: Student council secretary, Environmental Club president, National Honor Society, senior class co-president and cheerleading.

Community activities: YMCA gymnastics instructor volunteer, volunteer for Chicago mission trip, highway cleanup, Suicide Prevention Walk, cheer clinics, and volunteer assistant coach for KMS cheerleading.

Honors: Academic Letter and Bar, DAR Good Citizen Award and Award Essay winner, AP Literature Student of the Month, AP Calculus Student of the Month, Industrial Arts Student of the Month, and Elks Most Valuable Student state finalist.

She plans to attend the University of Florida for agriculture and natural resource management and environmental science and writing.

Owen Petschar is the son of Darren and Sherri Petschar.

School activities: Basketball, football, track and National Honor Society.

Community activities: American Martyrs Church altar server, youth football referee, Youth Summit Leadership Forum and Student Athlete Leadership Summit.

Honors: Academic Letter and Bar, Oral Roberts Whole Person Award recipient, and Detroit Free Press Outstanding Scholarship nominee.

His future plans are to attend the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point for paper science and chemical engineering.

Alek Shanks is the son of Mark and Joan Shanks.

School activities: Hockey, football, tennis, student council and National Honor Society.

Community activities: Fellowship of Christian Athletes and altar server.

Honors: Academic Letter and Bar, AP Calculus Student of the Month, Computer Science Student of the Month, Student of the Week, and Wendy’s Heisman Award.

His future plans are to attend Michigan State University for computer science.

Allison Sparpana is the daughter of Joseph and Eileen Sparpana.

School activities: Drama Club co-president, jazz band, pep band, marching band drum major, concert band, band section leader, National Honor Society treasurer, SADD and Key Club.

Community activities: Ice Reflections Figure Skating Club skater and coach, U.P. Youth Orchestra, Dickinson County Community Theater, altar server at Immaculate Conception Church and DCHS volunteer.

Honors: Academic Letter and Bar, AP Literature Student of the Month, University of Dayton Leadership in Service Award, and Menominee River Conference Honors Band.

She plans to attend the University of Michigan for communications with the intent to continue education at law school.

Caroline To is the daughter of Dr. John and Joanne To.

School activities: Student council co-president, senior class vice president, junior class president, band squad leader, jazz band, student council, SADD, National Honor Society historian, Key Club and after school tutor.

Community activities: Ballerina at Northern Michigan Dance Academy and Wisconsin Ambassador of Music.

Honors: AP History Student of the Month, AP Chemistry Student of the Month, AP Literature Student of the Month, and Academic Letter and Bar.

Her plans include attending New York University for global liberal studies.

Rebecca To is the daughter of Dr. John and Joanne To.

School activities: National Honor Society president, student council treasurer, Key Club, SADD, marching band squad leader, pep band and after school tutor.

Community activities: Northern Michigan Ballet dancer, and Red Cross Blood Drive volunteer.

Honors: Society of Women Engineers Award, Student of the Week, Academic Letter and Bar, AP U.S. History Student of the Month, AP Computer Science Student of the Month, AP Chemistry Student of the Month and AP Literature Student of the Month.

Her plans include attending the University of Michigan for pre-med.
