Iron Mountain woman sentenced

SANDRA WEST

IRON MOUNTAIN — An Iron Mountain woman was sentenced Monday in Dickinson County Circuit Court to a minimum 1.5-year prison term for stalking and threatening an ex-boyfriend over a four-month period.

Sandra Bernice West, 45, had pleaded to felony charges of aggravated stalking and bribing, intimidating or interfering with witnesses as a habitual offender-second.

The maximum penalty is 7.5 years in prison.

Officers served West with a personal protection order Sept. 1, 2016 prohibiting her from contacting the victim, according to the criminal complaint.

West continued to send the man hundreds of text messages, including threats of harm and public embarrassment, the complaint states.

She also asked the victim to drop the charges because they are making her sick and threatened to file civil suits and additional personal protection orders, according to the complaint.

Defense attorney Daniel Jaspen asked the court to instead consider a county jail sentence, pointing out this was “not a one-way situation.” West does have mental health issues but understands her actions were wrong, Jaspen added.

West apologized and expressed a desire to put the incident behind her.

Dickinson County Assistant Prosecutor Abbey Anderson claimed West terrorized the victim even while on bond and incarcerated.

“Jail did not stop her; hopefully prison will,” Anderson said.

West will get credit for 167 days already served in the Dickinson County Jail.
