Kingsford scholarships

The first Viens Family Scholarship was awarded to a member of the Kingsford High School Class of 2017. The development of this scholarship comes from a sincere desire that Art and Shirley Viens have to recognize an outstanding senior who has been an active member and participant on the KHS varsity football team. The recipient of a $750 scholarship was Trevor Roberts. Presenting the award is Art Viens.
Danielson Insurance Agency Inc. created a new scholarship to recognize KHS graduates in pursuing their dreams of attending college and working toward earning a post-secondary degree. Danielson Insurance was founded in 1982, and as a local company believes in supporting the community. Between non-profits and local associations, the agency contributes to dozens of organizations each year. “The community supports us as a local business and we are proud to have the opportunity give back,” said Ryan Danielson, president of the agency. Pictured in the photo is recipient Tyler Chrisman, who received a $500 scholarship at the Kingsford High School 2017 Scholarship Banquet, with Ryan Pepin of Danielson Insurance.
The family of the late John Denley Nelson has developed a scholarship to honor his memory. Nelson was a 2003 graduate of Kingsford High School. After graduation, his passion for water skiing took him around the world entertaining people of all ages. The first John Denley Nelson scholarship in the amount of $600 was awarded to Garrett Johnson, who will attend Northern Michigan University to pursue certification in HVAC. Presenting the award is Nelson’s sister, Jennifer Rubin.
Ryan Rice was a 2008 Kingsford High School graduate and a lifelong resident of the Upper Peninsula. He would be honored to know his desire to make a difference will continue in helping young people to further their education. Proceeds from the Ryan Rice Golf Outing, in addition to family support, combine to fund the scholarships. The Ryan D. Rice Memorial Scholarship will provide two renewable $500 scholarships to students pursuing post-secondary education at a two- or four-year college, university or technical/vocational school. The recipients of the first Ryan Rice Memorial Scholarship, presented at the 2017 Kingsford High School Scholarship Banquet, were Mackenzie Hull, left, and Sydney Wickman.

Kingsford High School is a proud recipient of a donation from the estate of Robert D. Spencer, who had a sincere passion for working with young people not only as students in his classroom when he taught at the Oconto Falls and Crivitz High Schools but also as he worked with them in the role of senior class adviser. Upon his passing, former students reflected on his character, of his “kindheartedness and (as) a man who always encouraged all of his students to do their best.” The Robert D. Spencer Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Kingsford High School graduates Kelsey Weecks, left, and Sabrina Wickman.
