Five teachers hired at BTS

KINGSFORD — Five teachers have been hired by the Breitung Township Schools District just in time to start out the new school year when classes begin Tuesday.

The new hires include Aaron Yonke, social studies teacher; Sarah Massie, a science teacher at Kingsford Middle School; Jeremiah Garrigues-Cortelyou, music teacher for grades 6 through 12; Diane Peters, middle school and high school teacher in technology and math; and Tina Doran, an early kindergarten teacher at Woodland Elementary School.

Yonke comes to Breitung Township Schools from the Green Bay area, where he taught history and coached football and track for eight years. He earned his bachelor’s degree from St. Norbert College and his master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

He and his wife Emily, and their two sons, Harrison and Benjamin, are moving to the local area.

Massie is a graduate of Westwood High School in Ishpeming, and recently completed a degree in math and an integrated science teaching major from Michigan Technological University.

In her free time, she enjoy coaching and playing tennis and spending time with her family on the lake at camp.

She noted that she is excited to be starting her teaching career at Kingsford Middle School and can’t wait to see what this year has in store.

Garrigues-Cortelyou studied music education at Michigan State University and taught for two years in rural Iowa before returning to Michigan. He has worked several summers at Interlochen Arts Camp near Traverse City. He said he is looking forward to joining the music program at Kingsford.

Peters completed her undergraduate studies at Central Michigan University receiving a bachelor of science degree in education, majoring in mathematics. She obtained a master’s of arts degree in educational technology from Michigan State University. Peters is a 2003 graduate of Kingsford High School.

She has enjoyed teaching in the Dominican Republic, North Dickinson and most recently Bark River-Harris schools. She lives in Iron Mountain with her husband Michael and their three daughters, Ava, Isabella and Amelia.

Doran is a native of the Upper Peninsula and lives in Kingsford with her husband and two children.

She graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in early childhood education, and has taught all over the country.

“I am very excited to be part of Woodland Elementary and Breitung Township Schools,” she said.
