KINGSFORD — An employee had minor injuries after an explosion Friday afternoon at Smith Castings on North Balsam Avenue, Kingsford Public Safety officers said.

Officers determined the explosion occurred about 1:25 p.m. when molten metal came in contact with water. Employees had extinguished the resulting fire, and officers ventilated the building.

Beacon Ambulance paramedics took the injured employee to Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.

The cause remains under investigation, officers said.
