Top seniors named at Kingsford High School

KINGSFORD — The administration at Kingsford High School has announced the top 10 percent of the Class of 2018 with a grade point average between 3.972-4.146.

The 13 students are Casey Hansley, Hailey Johnson, Madison Koski, Jordyn Kriegl, Olivia Lorenzoni, Dominic Occhietti, Benjamin Olson, Sawyer Perpich, Robert “Eddie” Plumley, Madeline Ryan, Sydney Smith, Joe Sturm, and Mitchell Wiltzius.

Casey Hansley is the daughter of Marie Harris and David and Lisa Hansley.

School activities: Pep band, jazz band, jazz combo, SADD, drama treasurer, National Honor Society vice president, and tennis.

Community activities: Moving Mountains Adaptive Program, TUMC North Dakota Mission Trip, Camp Michigamme Counselor, and tutoring.

Honors: Academic letter and bar, AP Student of the Month for calculus, computer science and literature, 2018 Michigan Affiliate NCWII Award for Aspirations in Computing, Solo and Ensemble local and state level awards, and STARR Scholarship.

She plans to attend Michigan State University for computer science.

Hailey Johnson is the daughter of Tony and Jodi Mortier.

School activities: Swim team captain, Student Council, Key Club, pep band, National Honor Society president, drumline, and squad leader.

Community activities: NLY Swim team member, VBS counselor, lifeguard and swim instructor.

Honors: Academic letter and bar, AP Student of the Month for U.S. history, literature and composition and computer science, Student of the Week, Key Club Member of the Month, and Detroit News Outstanding High School senior nominee.

She plans to attend the University of Michigan.

Madison Koski is the daughter of Brad and Wendy Koski.

School activities: Band, Key Club, National Honor Society, basketball, soccer, and HOSA.

Community activities: Mission trip in North Dakota, SAY soccer, Camp Michigamme counselor, and altar server.

Honors: Academic letter and bar, KHS Volunteer of the Year, first place in sports medicine event at HOSA Regionals.

She will be attending Northern Michigan University for physical therapy.

Jordyn Kriegl is the daughter of Joe and Laura Kriegl.

School activities: Volleyball, basketball, softball, National Honor Society, and Key Club.

Community activities: Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Honors: Academic letter and bar, AP Chemistry Student of the Month, GNC first team, GNC all-defensive team, All U.P. second team, All State third team, and Wendy’s High School Heisman School winner.

Her future plans are to play basketball at Edgewood College and to study pre-medicine or education.

Olivia Lorenzoni is the daughter of Jon and Liz Lorenzoni.

School activities: Key Club, Environmental Club, Drama Club, National Honor Society, basketball, volleyball, softball, and after school tutor.

Community activities: Blood drive volunteer.

Honors: Academic letter and bar, honorable mention in Congressional Art Competition, Artist of the Month, AP U.S. History Student of the Month, more than 400 hours of community service, and Detroit News Outstanding student nominee.

Dominic Occhietti is the son of Dr. Mike and Dr. Maria Occhietti.

School activities: Key Club president, marching band, drum major, pep band, jazz band, National Honor Society treasurer, student council, and Academic Booster Club.

Community activities: Friends of the Braumart, MOTOR, marching band camp, and downtown Iron Mountain volunteer.

Honors: Academic letter and bar, history and chemistry department awards, AP Student of the Month for calculus, computer science, U.S. history and chemistry, and Detroit News Scholarship.

His plans include receiving a French horn performance major.

Benjamin Olson is the son of Rick and Debbie Olson.

School activities: Key Club, football, track, Robotics Club, Art Club, tutoring, and National Honor Society.

Community activities: Volunteers at the Oscar G. Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center Community Living Center.

Honors: Academic letter and bar, AP Student of the Month for computer science and chemistry, Creative Soul Award for mechanical design.

His plans include attending Michigan Technological University or Clemson University for mechanical engineering.

Sawyer Perpich is the son of Dennis and Jill Perpich.

School activities: Football, hockey, golf, National Honor Society, Key Club, and LINKS.

Community activities: Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Faith Formation, altar server, Feeding America.

Honors: Academic letter and bar, AP Calculus Student of the Month, GNC first team quarterback, GNC Offensive Player of the Year, All U.P. Dream Team quarterback, and all U.P. large school Offensive Player of the Year.

He plans to attend Michigan State University for elementary education.

Robert “Eddie” Plumley is the son of Rob Plumley and Linda Plumley.

School activities: Football, basketball, track, robotics, National Honor Society, Academic Booster Club, and pep band.

Community activities: Youth group, Follow-Up, altar server, and Car Club.

Honors: Academic letter and bar, AP Chemistry Student of the Month, and Student of the Week.

His future plans are to attend Ferris State University for pre-pharmacy.

Madeline Ryan is the son of Adam and Kristy Ryan.

School activities: Pep band, marching band, concert band, soccer, cross country, tennis, tutoring, and National Honor Society.

Community activities: Youth group, Light at the Inn Homeless Shelter, mission trip to Spirit Lake Nation in North Dakota, community meals at Trinity United Methodist Church, Camp Michigamme counselor, more than 600 hours of community service.

Honors: Academic letter and bar, honors band, AP Student of the Month, first team all-conference for soccer.

She plans to attend Albion College for pre-medical.

Sydney Smith is the daughter of Clifford and Linda Smith.

School activities: National Honor Society, band, section leader (flutes), and squad leader (trombone).

Community activities: More than 450 hours of community service, and member of church choir.

Honors: Academic letter and bar.

Her future plans are to attend the University of Michigan for engineering.

Joe Sturm is the son of Chris and Susan Sturm.

School activities: Cross country, National Honor Society, Student Council, Quiz Bowl, Key Club, class president, and Business Professionals of America.

Community activities: Volunteer at American Martyrs Church in Kingsford.

Honors: Academic letter and bar, AP Student of the Month for U.S. history, calculus and chemistry, National Merit finalist, Air Force Math and Science Award, and Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award.

He plans to attend Northern Michigan University for secondary mathematics education and accounting.

Mitchell Wiltzius is the son Andrew and Brenda Wiltzius.

School activities: SADD president, Student Council president, cross country, track, band drum major, and National Honor Society.

Community activities: Certified election inspector, VA volunteer, wedding vocalist, and church soloist.

Honors: Academic letter and bar, Student of the Week, and AP Student of the Month.

He plans to enroll at Albion College for political science and piano.
