West Iron names top students for 2018 class

ALEX PANGRAZZI

IRON RIVER — West Iron County High School has announced its top 10 graduates for the Class of 2018.

They include:

— Alex Pangrazzi, of Iron River, is the daughter of Ian and Sara Gill. She received the Air Force Award, a scholarship to attend Michigan State University’s OseteoCHAMP summer program; the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizenship Award 2017; the Centralis Gold Award; and was accepted into the National Honor Society and Central Michigan honors program. Pangrazzi has been active in tennis, basketball, track and field, volleyball, softball, the pom dance team and a statistician for the football team. She is president of the senior class and the student council; Key Club secretary; and a member of the Forest Club, Spanish Club, yearbook staff and Quiz Bowl. Pangrazzi has served her community as the student representative for the Iron County Lakes, Rivers and Streams Partnership; Miss Iron County 2016; a member of St. Cecelia Catholic Church; and a volunteer for many other organizations. She worked for the Windsor Center, SAY Soccer and Batawagama Youth Camp. She plans to major in pre-medicine at Central Michigan University with the goal of becoming a pediatrician.

— Breanna Kemppainen, of Iron River, is the daughter of Dale and Elizabeth Kemppainen. She has participated in Forest Club, Key Club, student council, Quiz Bowl, Spanish Club, the yearbook editor and president of National Honor Society. Kemppainen also was in volleyball and golf. She had a job as well at Lac ‘O Seasons resort year-round and refereed for youth soccer in the summer. Kemppainen plans to study environmental science and chemistry at Lake Superior State University, hoping to work for the Environmental Protection Agency.

— Summer Parent, of Iron River, is the daughter of Brad and Marie Parent and raised by Roger and Debbie Bloom. She was on the academic honor roll and completed three on-line college courses through Bay College. Parent has been both treasurer and president of the Forest Club, secretary of National Honor Society and was a member of Key Club, Spanish Club and symphony.

BREANNA KEMPPAINEN

She also played volleyball. Parent is involved in community organizations such as American Legion Auxiliary and the American Red Cross. She plans to study pre-med at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois, toward becoming a surgeon.

— Neil Tomasoski, of Iron River, is the son of Doug and Kelly Tomasoski. He has been on the A-Honor Roll all four years. He was accepted into the National Honor Society for both junior and senior years. Tomasoski is a member of the Key Club, Yearbook Committee and basketball, football and tennis teams. He also volunteered at Vacation Bible School, Youth Football Camp, the Northwoods Animal Shelter and the Iron County Ice Arena. Tomasoski plans to pursue a pre-physical therapy degree at Central Michigan University.

— Steven Nelson, of Iron River, is the son of Larry and Teresa Nelson. He has participated in basketball and tennis, Key Club, Forest Club and Fellowship of Christian Athletes and has been on the A-Honor all four years. Nelson also has volunteered with highway clean-ups, fundraisers and helping with other projects. He plans to pursue a construction technology degree at Gogebic Community College toward becoming an independent contractor in the western Upper Michigan area.

— Christian Benson, of Iron River, is the son of Jack and Julie Benson. He has been on the A-Honor roll and receiving academic medals. Benson is a member of the local History Club and participates on the varsity tennis team. Her is a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and likes to participate in the local blood drives. He plans to seek a bachelor’s degree in geological engineering at Michigan Technological University.

— Victoria Maloney, Iron River, is the daughter of Pete and Denise Maloney. She has participated in volleyball, track and the dance team. She is on the honor roll, accepted into National Honor Society and will graduate with 21 dual-enrollment credits. Maloney is a community volunteer with VBS, the annual 5k Rainbow Run, has coached volleyball, T-ball, and taught dance and gymnastics for UP Dance Academy. She plans to study nursing at Bellin College in Green Bay, Wis.

SUMMER PARENT

— Kevin Ballinger, of Iron River, is the son of Timmothy Ballinger and Michelle Tomlinson.

He has made the A-Honor Roll through high school and played on the varsity tennis team for four years. Ballinger plans to pursue an electrical engineering degree at Michigan Technological University.

— Hadley Passamani, of Iron River, is the daughter of Deryk and Melissa Passamani. She has been a member of the National Honor Society, made the A/B Honor Roll, participated in track and field, volleyball, dance and Key Club.

Passamani also has participated in highway clean-up, collected for Toys for Tots, volunteered at the Northwoods Animal Shelter, walked in parades, and helped with fun festivals for the elementary children. Passamani plans to move to Green Bay and work at Scott’s Subs in DePere for the summer and then study massage therapy at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College in Green Bay.

— Natalie Tomasoski, of Iron River, is the daughter of Doug and Kelly Tomasoski. She has been on the National Honor Society for two years and on the honor roll all four years of high school. She participated in tennis, basketball, the dance team and was a stat girl for the varsity football team for four years. Tomasoski is a member of student council, Key Club, yearbook committee and has been vice president of her class all four years.

NEIL TOMASOSKI

She volunteers at the Iron County Ice Arena, the animal shelter and is a member of the St. Cecilia Catholic Church. Tomasoski plans to study health administration at Central Michigan University.
