Engine show comes to Escanaba

ESCANABA — The U.P. Steam and Gas Engine Association’s 43rd annual show takes place today through Monday at the U.P. State Fairgrounds.

The show will include equipment demonstrations, a daily equipment parade at 1 p.m. Eastern time, and the daily “Engine Crank-Up” at 2 p.m.

Show attendees also will be able to enjoy the Antique Village’s agricultural museum, an antique automobile show that will feature cars produced between 1900 and 1935, the Antique Village’s artisans, a knife and gun show and one of the biggest flea markets in the U.P.

Other Labor Day weekend events include the 75th annual Rock Lions Labor Day Celebration on Saturday. A parade will take place at 11 a.m. Eastern time, followed by activities for all ages at the Rock Lions Clubhouse grounds.

The Cedar River Bridge Walk also is set for Saturday. Due to bridge construction, this year’s walk will not cross the Cedar River on M-35; instead, the walk will take place on the Camp O Road bridge adjacent to Hirsch’s Cedar River Pub.

All activity for the bridge walk will be at Hirsch’s Cedar River Pub, and will start at 11 a.m. Central time. Ceremonies will take place in the pavilion behind the pub; a walk across the Camp O Road bridge will follow, led by Bridge Walk T-shirt contest winner Morgan Bergquist and the Cedar River queen.

Bridge Walk attendees are advised not to park on the north side of the Cedar River Bridge, as pedestrian traffic is not allowed on this bridge and they will be unable to get across. Safe parking can be found along Camp O Road, 20.50 Lane, near area churches and by a gas station.

The Nahma Labor Day celebration will take place Sunday, with a parade at 11 a.m. Eastern time, followed by musical entertainment and other events.

There will be a bridge walk in Cornell Township at 10 a.m. Eastern time Monday at the township hall.
