State to provide $3.7 million for UP flood relief — Snyder

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — The state of Michigan plans to help share the cost of providing matching funds for federal disaster relief to communities in the Upper Peninsula affected by severe flooding in June.

Gov. Rick Snyder’s office announced Friday that he’s authorized the state to match about $3.7 million of the 25 percent of matching funds local grant recipients are required to pay under the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s public assistance program.

Snyder earlier declared a state of disaster for Houghton, Gogebic and Menominee counties due to the flooding. A presidential disaster declaration was also declared.

A preliminary damage assessment determined public agencies in the counties sustained more than $29.8 million in damages eligible for public assistance relief. State and local grant recipients are responsible for matching 25 percent, or about $7.4 million.
