DCHS makes trustee appointments

IRON MOUNTAIN — Kim Van Osdol, a bank executive who recently moved to Loretto, has been selected to fill a vacancy on the Dickinson County Healthcare System Board of Trustees.

Van Osdol was one of six candidates interviewed following the resignation of Brock Wallis, said Board Chairman William Edberg. Van Osdol has more than four decades of experience in the banking industry, mostly at the executive level, including 25 years with Michigan Financial Corporation.

He also has eight years of experience serving on a health system board. He’s currently employed as a market president at Great North Bank in Aurora.

On Thursday, the nine-member hospital board also reappointed three of its current members to three-year terms. They are David Holmes, Dale Ward Sr. and Dick Berlinski. All of the appointments are subject to the advice and consent of the county board.

In other action, the hospital board reviewed a financial report for October, showing $8.68 million in operating revenue and $9.07 million in expenses, resulting in a loss in operating icome of $384,570. After the calculation of non-operating revenue and expenses, through October, the 2018 year-to-date bottom line is a negative $4.86.

Even with October’s loss, the hospital continues to show improvement in its days cash on hand, officials said.

DCHS currently has enough cash for about 26 days of operation, up from 13, according to Venable LLP partner Bart Stupak, who is leading a financial restructuring.

A review of patient activity throughout the month of October showed the following: cared for 217 inpatients; cared for 15,317 patients in the outpatient hospital setting including 1,009 in the emergency department; and cared for 11,915 patients in physician offices. Uncompensated care provided for the month totaled $388,371.
