UP highway reopens after crash, whiteout
SENEY, Mich. (AP) — Authorities have reopened a highway that was closed because of a large chain reaction crash that seriously injured three people in Schoolcraft County.
Michigan State Police said a 25-mile stretch of M-28 between M-77 in Seney and M-94 in Shingleton was shut down for three hours amid whiteout conditions after the crash about 12:15 p.m., roughly 5 miles west of Seney.
Troopers said a westbound Subaru driven by a 67-year-old Traverse City man ran into the back of a Ford pickup truck driven by a 41-year-old Ohio man and pulling a covered trailer. The Subaru then crossed the center line and was struck in the side by an eastbound Buick driven by a 52-year-old Royal Oak man.
The driver of the Subaru, his 65-year-old passenger and a 52-year-old passenger in the Buick were seriously injured and initially taken to Helen Newberry Joy Hospital in Newberry for treatment.
A total of eight vehicles were damaged in the chain-reaction crash and numerous other vehicles went into the ditch to avoid collisions, according to the MSP.
