IRON MOUNTAIN — Everyone in the family guessed Tyler James Gross would arrive early but only his dad predicted his birthday would be Jan. 1.

Born to Tina St. John and Joe Gross of Florence, Wis., the first baby of the new year arrived at 6:48 a.m. Tuesday, 11 days early, weighing 6 pounds 1 ounce.

“I knew he was coming early. I felt it. He just sat really low. I just knew it,” St. John said.

He didn’t just make his debut early but also quickly, approximately 3 hours after his parents arrived at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital on Tuesday morning. St. John’s other two deliveries lasted 23 and 26 hours, respectively.

Tyler James was the smallest at birth of all seven children. His sister, Alexi Lynn, is the only girl among brothers Austin Gross, Brody Lynn, Jayden Gross, Dyllan Gross and Jaxson Gross.

The couple agreed on the name Tyler, and James is the middle name of Gross’s stepfather.

“We wanted T.J. because it’s our names put together, Tina and Joe,” St. John added. He resembles both brothers Brody Lynn and Austin Gross.

Grandparents are Lissa Bloechl of Elcho, Robert St. John of Milwaukee, Patti Gross and Randy Schneider of West Allis, Wis.

The parents of the first baby of the New Year receive a $50 Slumberland gift certificate, a $50 Econofoods gift card, a certificate from Main Street Pizza as well a gift basket from the Dickinson County Memorial Hospital.

Tyler James Gross reportedly was the second baby born in the Upper Peninsula for 2019, though no information was available on the first U.P. delivery.

Iron Mountain has ties to another first baby of 2019 as well, this one in the Manitowoc-Two Rivers area in Wisconsin. Norah Jo Werner was born at 12:32 a.m. Tuesday to David and Erica Werner of Manitowoc; Erica is a former Iron Mountain residents whose parents, Brett and Patti Ebertsch, still live here.
