Felch extends deadline to pay winter taxes

Township’s sexton position remains unfilled

FELCH — Felch Township residents again will have until the end of February to pay their winter property tax bills without penalty.

The Felch Township Board on Monday moved the deadline from Feb. 14 to Feb. 28, as it has for several years in the past. Summer taxes also can be paid by that date but will be charged 6 percent interest, or 1 percent per month, for being six months past the Sept. 14 deadline, Township Treasurer Marilyn Steinbrecher said.

In other business, the board:

— Heard that Supervisor Bob Mattson will seek assistance from the Central Upper Peninsula

Planning and Development Regional Commission, or CUPPAD, on grants to expand camping spaces and make other improvements at Norway Lake Park. The township took over the park from Dickinson County in 2016.

— Learned the Felch cemetery still has no sexton and no prospects for the job. While the township continues to do maintenance at the cemetery and the onset of winter has halted burials for now, the lack of a sexton means Felch has no one to oversee record-keeping and plot sales.

— Was advised by township Clerk Darrell Oman that he will request a pay increase for himself and Treasurer Marilyn Steinbrecher in 2019, explaining that neither position has had a raise in years while duties have expanded. In particular, Oman expects he will have to be in office more hours before the next election to meet expansion of absentee ballots and same-day voter registration.

— Was told the township’s Parks and Recreation Committee will meet at 6 p.m. Jan. 28.
