Peretto tapped to lead Iron County Board

CRYSTAL FALLS — District 1 Commissioner Patti Peretto was chosen Wednesday as the new chairwoman of the Iron County Board.

Peretto, board representative for Gaastra and the townships of Iron River and Stambaugh since 2013, won the position on a 3-2 vote during the county’s organizational meeting. She succeeds Commissioner Tim Aho of District 5, who got his own and District 4 Commissioner Sharon Leonoff’s vote to retain the two-year post.

Vice-chairman will be Mike Stafford, elected in November over three other candidates after incumbent James Brennan III decided not to run again in District 2, which covers Bates Township and the northern half of Iron River. Stafford also was selected Wednesday to head the Finance Committee.

In addition, the commissioners Wednesday decided to pick their board chairman on an annual basis, rather than every two years, but that will not take effect until Peretto completes her two-year term. This puts it on the same schedule as the vice-chairman position.

Committee appointments still need to be finalized. The Iron County Board will have its regular meeting at 4 p.m. Tuesday in the board room of the Iron County Courthouse annex.
