Breitung finalizes ban on retail marijuana operations

QUINNESEC — The Breitung Township Board has adopted an ordinance prohibiting the retail sale and production of recreational marijuana within its borders.

The board Monday took the necessary steps to prevent dispensaries, grow operations and other related businesses within the township after Michigan became the 10th state in the country to legalize recreational marijuana in November.

The ordinance — which the board initially approved 6-1 on Jan. 14 — cleared its final vote unanimously Monday and now formally becomes part of the Breitung Township charter.

“We’ve dotted the I’s, crossed the T’s,” Supervisor Denny Olson said.

The prohibition can be lifted at any time should the board choose to permit commercial cannabis operations, township officials noted.

In other business, the board:

— Approved buying a slim parcel of land in Quinnesec from the Michigan Land Bank Fast Track Authority. The township already owns land adjacent to the parcel — known as Lot 10, Block 3 — so the addition would make the area more suitable for development. The property will be purchased through a quit claim deed for $300.
