Gaudette to retire as Breitung Township superintendent

QUINNESEC — Breitung Township Superintendent John Gaudette has announced he will retire May 31.

“It has been my distinct honor and pleasure to work with you serving the needs of our residents, taxpayers and neighbors,” Gaudette wrote in a letter submitted Friday.

The township board Monday showed an obvious reluctance when Supervisor Denny Olson asked for a motion to accept the resignation.

“If we don’t do that, does he have to stay?” Breitung Township treasurer Carol Taylor joked.

Board Trustee Rich Wales eventually moved to accept Gaudette’s resignation “with regret.”

During public comment, Quinnesec resident Doni-Mae Rauch said she was saddened to hear Gaudette intended to retire, adding the community should be grateful for his service.

“I’m here to say thank you,” Rauch said.

Michael Day, another Quinnesec resident, said Gaudette couldn’t have been more professional.

In other business, the board:

— Adopted an ordinance prohibiting the retail sale and production of recreational marijuana within Breitung Township borders. The board previously passed an improper resolution to adopt the ordinance, and is repeating steps in the process to avoid future legal challenges.

— Applied for a $5,000 grant from the Central Upper Peninsula Regional Prosperity Collaborative to promote the East Kingsford park and recreation complex.

— Agreed to purchase a $100 supporter signature advertisement in the Kingsford High School senior graduation celebration program. The money will go toward an all-night party for graduates hosted by KHS on May 25.

— Authorized up to $40,000 for the purchase of a bucket truck by Department of Public Works Superintendent Guy Forstrom.

— Approved registration, lodging and mileage expenses for treasurer Carol Taylor to attend the Michigan Municipal Treasurers Association Advanced Institute in Mount Pleasant from May 20-22.

— Relocated the polling places for precinct 1 in Quinnesec and precinct 3 in East Kingsford to the large bay in the DPW building on 3850 Menominee St., as the Quinnesec and East Kingsford fire halls didn’t have enough space.

— Amended the master logger timber sale contract with Wender Logging, extending the contract end date by a year. The contract is now set to expire March 31, 2020.
