A day with farmer McBroom

Third-grade students from West Iron County Schools in Iron River on Thursday visited Melodydell Dairy, the family dairy farm of Michigan state Sen. Ed McBroom. Here, McBroom talks to the students as they eat string cheese made from milk produced at Melodydell Dairy. Most of the milk from the farm is made into mozzarella cheese, McBroom said. Third-grade students from West Iron County Schools in Iron River on Thursday visited Melodydell Dairy, the family dairy farm of Michigan state Sen. Ed McBroom. The dairy began in 1917 and now is in its fourth generation. Ed and his wife, Sarah, often work as many as 16 hours a day but welcome the opportunity to show students life on the farm. “I miss being a teacher,” McBroom said. West Iron began bringing third-graders to the McBroom Farm about eight years ago, said Denise Maloney, a teacher and health and wellness coordinator at West Iron. “It is such a fantastic opportunity for our children to see the ‘farm-to-table’ concept and to see where their food comes from.”
