CRYSTAL FALLS — The world’s largest continuous mushroom in the world will be celebrated this weekend at the 28th annual Humongous Fungus Festival.

The Humongous Fungus is spread over more than 37 subterranean acres near Crystal Falls. It is an Armillaria gallica fungus, also known as a “honey mushroom” or “shoestring mushroom.” It was discovered in 1988, weighs an estimated 200,000 pounds and is between 1,500 to 10,000 years old.

Festival activities will kick off at 4 p.m. with the Great Ball Race on Crystal Avenue. Patrons purchase numbered drawing tickets corresponding to numbered balls that are rolled down the street, with the fastest balls winning prizes.

The “Psychedelic ’60s” Fungus Fest parade will follow at 5:30 p.m. with the lineup beginning at 4:30 p.m. in the Forest Park School parking lot and starting on Superior Avenue.

The traditional Fin vs Pollack softball game will begin at 6:45 p.m. at Runkle Lake Park.

The Daydreamers will perform at 7 p.m. for the street dance — complete with refreshment tent and free tie-dyeing. Shirts will be available purchase for the tie-dyeing or you can bring your own clothing item.

On Saturday, fest attendees will enjoy sampling all kinds of different mushroom-themed dishes from local restaurants and the Humongous Mushroom Pizza, which will be served for free at 3 p.m.

Mushroom foraging experts will lead two guided mushroom foraging trips at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Registration is required for the guided forages and transportation will be provided. Cost is $20 per person.

There will also be city-wide rummage sales from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with maps available as well as a flea market at Iron County Medicare Facility.

The public is invited to a pie social at the United Methodist Church from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

There also will be free kids games and crafts, and a softball tournament at Runkle Lake Park.

The festivities wrap up on Saturday evening with a performance at 7 p.m. by The Doors of Chicago at the Crystal Theatre in Crystal Falls.
