Ghost Town tour planned by Amberg Historical Society

AMBERG, Wis. — The Amberg Historical Society will conduct its every other year Ghost Town Tour to Phillipsburg in the town of Athelstane and Taylor Rapids in the town of Silver Cliff.

These are small settlements that appeared in the very early 20th century after the big timber companies had harvested the native pine and other wood.

Shortly after the Great Depression began, a combination of economic factors and action by the Marinette County Board caused the residents to resettle and the area became part of the Marinette County forest land. But during the time they were there the folks built homes, small farms, a church, schools and left an interesting story.

The day will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, with an orientation at the main building in the Amberg Museum Complex and participants will then carpool to the historic sites.

More about the society and a virtual tour of the Amberg Museum is also available at amberghistory.org.

No registration is required and there is no fee for the event. Monetary donations to the museum are always greatly appreciated.
