IM council turns down business request to vacate street

IRON MOUNTAIN — A business owner’s request to have the city vacate part of an undeveloped street was denied Monday after neighbors raised objections.

UP Auto Sales asked the city to vacate the west half of the 500 block of Chapin Street for 90 feet from the Fifth Street right-of-way. The change would allow for extra parking and storage of vehicles, owners Scott and Mina Fayas said.

But Julie Eutizzi said the change would bring down the value of her home, while Andrew Waitrovich said it was unnecessary and would restrict access.

Scott Fayas said the city parcel should revert to the property owners because a street no longer is planned. Acknowledging that Eutizzi was against the change, the applicants had asked that just the west half be vacated.

The council first voted on a motion to vacate the entire parcel, with Mayor Dale Alessandrini saying the city would be free of maintaining the property while UP Auto Sales could expand.

Council members Bill Revord and Kyle Blomquist joined Alessandrini in voting yes, but Nathan Zemar, Pam Maule, Juan Saldana and Butch Schinderle voted no. A motion to vacate only the west half failed by the same count.

In other action, the council:

— Heard City Manager Jordan Stanchina report that motorists may encounter delays or detours on Traders Mine Road while Boss Snowplow relocates a force main, at its own expense, to allow for an office expansion.

— Noted a public engagement meeting has been set for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, at the Izzo-Mariucci Center to hear how residents would like to see Iron Mountain develop over the next 10 years. The community session is part of the work being done by Beckett & Raeder to update the city’s master plan.
