IM voters approve levy for police liaison officer in schools

Voters Tuesday backed a proposal to fund a full-time police liaison officer in Iron Mountain Public Schools, with 338 yes to 220 no.

In Norway, meanwhile, newcomer Jeff Muraro edged incumbent Jeremy Oja to gain a city council seat.

The new Iron Mountain tax levy for the liaison officer will be up to .55 mills, or 55 cents per $1,000 of taxable property value, for the next five years.

Voters had rejected a similar increase to rescue the program in November 2014 by a count of 1,125 no to 986 yes. An officer had been assigned to the position for about 12 years when the school decided it would no longer split the cost with the city.

On a home worth $90,000, with a taxable value of $45,000, a tax of .55 mills amounts to $24.75 a year. It’s estimated the .55 mills would raise about $131,000 when first levied in 2020, but city officials have indicated the initial tax may be lower.

In Norway, Oja and two other incumbents faced two challengers in a race for three at-large seats on the five-member city council. Candy Brew, the current mayor, was the leading vote-getter with 313 votes, followed by incumbent Lee Meneghini, 308. Muraro won the third seat with 226 votes, followed by Oja at 217 and Mark Bubloni at 210.

There were four candidates for four at-large positions on the seven-member Iron Mountain City Council. Results were Kyle Blomquist, 385; Pamela Maule, 384; Ken Clawson, 350; and Nathan Zemar, 305. Blomquist, Maule and Zemar are incumbents, while Clawson will replace Juan Saldana, who did not seek re-election. There also was a write-in candidate, Dale Close, but just 12 write-ins were recorded.

There was no opposition on the ballot in Kingsford for three seats on the five-member city council. Incumbents Michael Flaminio, 180 votes, and Cynthia Dixon-Miller, 168, were re-elected. Newcomer Kylie Remer also gained a seat with 164 votes. Incumbent Tony Erickson did not seek re-election.
