Forest Park honors top students for Class of 2020

KAILEE ABTS

CRYSTAL FALLS — The Forest Park School District has named the top 10 students in its Class of 2020.

They are:

— Kailee Abts, daughter of Sara and John Skibo and Darrell and Dina Abts, has participated in track, Business Professionals of America, Youth Advisory Committee, Math Club, Spanish Club, class officer, volunteering, bowling and National Honor Society. After high school, Abts plans to major in elementary education and minor in Spanish at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay in the fall.

— Bailey Blazier, daughter of Becky and Ryan Blazier, was a member of the Forest Park band until her senior year, attended the UP Honors Band her sophomore year and spent several summers at Batawagama’s band camp. She also participated in Business Professionals of America for two years. She believes her greatest accomplishments of high school, however, came in a Dickinson Iron Intermediate School District graphic communications vocational class in her junior and senior year. “I had the opportunity to work on many projects I’m proud of,” Blazier said. “I was also lucky enough to work with some great clients within the community.”

She plans to major in graphic design at Northern Michigan University in Marquette in the fall.

BAILEY BLAZIER

— Caitlyn Bloomburg, daughter of Lisa Koon-Bloomburg and Arthur Bloomburg, was involved during high school in basketball, volleyball, golf, student council, BPA, YAC, Math Club, and National Honor Society. Outside of school, she was in the Iron County Sharp Shooters 4-H Club and worked at Camp Batawagama. Bloomburg plans to study psychology at the University of Michigan.

— Evan Hedtke, son of Michael and Sally Hedtke, has participated in football for four years, hockey for three years and golf through high school until it was curtailed this spring. He also was in the National Honor Society, Business Professionals of America for three years and the Youth Advisory Committee for one year. Hedtke plans to major in biomedical sciences in pre-dental and minor in business at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh; he also will play football for the Titans.

— Sydney Honkala, daughter of Barbie Besiak and Jason Honkala, was student council vice president and a member of National Honor Society, Youth Advisory Committee, Spanish Club and Business Professionals of America, where she twice qualified for state competition. Honkala also played junior varsity and varsity basketball and volleyball. She plans to study criminal justice at Northern Michigan University.

— Hanna Lesniewski, daughter of Michael and Valarie Lesniewski, has been in Youth Advisory Committee, Business Professionals of America, Student Council and Math Club. She participated as well in volleyball as a freshman and cheerleading as a senior. She earned straight A’s throughout her entire academic schooling and did well in a few college classes, too. She enjoys art, spending her free time sketching and painting, along with reading books. She plans to pursue an architectural design degree after high school.

— Mindy McKinnon, daughter of Sue Wheeler and Bruce McKinnon, has been involved throughout high school in Business Professionals of America, Student Council, Youth Advisory Committee and National Honor Society. Outside of school, she is part of the Iron County 4-H Sharpshooters along with the Iron County 4-H Artemis Archers. McKinnon also volunteers every Saturday at the Northwoods Animal Shelter and has a part-time job at the Paint River Landing. She plans to study veterinary medicine at Michigan State University.

CAITLYN BLOOMBURG

— Morgan Ponchaud, daughter of Dave and Ann Ponchaud, was involved in student council — which she said gave her a lot of volunteer experience — and Business Professionals of America. She made it to BPA state competition this year but could not attend. Ponchaud plans to major in biology at Grand Valley State University toward hopefully becoming a wildlife biologist.

— Bryce Smithson, son of Lyle and Debbie Smithson, has been involved in student council and is now president. He also participated in Business Professionals of America, Youth Advisory Committee, National Honor Society and Spanish Club, plus basketball, football and golf. Smithson plans to study allied health sciences/pre-med at Grand Valley State University.
