New cases of COVID-19 reported for region in UP, Wisconsin

State health officials this weekend listed new COVID-19 cases in Gogebic and Marquette counties in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, while among Wisconsin counties in the region the counts rose in Forest and Marinette counties.

In Marquette County, the Eastwood Nursing Center in Negaunee reported on its Facebook page that an employee had tested positive for COVID-19. That person works in the laundry department and has had no direct contact with residents, facility officials said, adding that four employees who worked closely with that person have tested negative. Additional testing is planned.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services on Saturday added a new case to Marquette County’s count, bringing it to 52 positives, including 10 deaths.

The MDHHS’s COVID-19 data site Sunday showed Baraga County with one virus case; Houghton, Luce and Chippewa counties with two cases; Schoolcraft County with four cases; Gogebic County with five cases and a death; Dickinson County with five cases and two deaths; Mackinac County with six cases; Menominee County with eight cases; Delta County with 14 cases and two deaths; and Marquette County with 52 cases and 10 deaths.

The MDHHS also has separately listed prison inmates as positive in Luce and Chippewa counties.

The tally Sunday afternoon left the U.P.’s total at 103 positive, including 15 deaths.

Iron, Keweenaw, Alger and Ontonagon counties have yet to report a COVID-19 case in the Upper Peninsula and are the only counties in Michigan not to have at least one positive coronavirus test.

The MDHHS statewide reported 638 confirmed new COVID-19 cases Sunday for a total of 51,142 to date. But Michigan had only 11 new deaths — and none in Detroit, which has been the epicenter for the state’s outbreak — for 4,891 to date.

For Wisconsin counties in the region, the state Department of Health Services’ COVID-19 site Sunday listed Marinette County with 24 cases and two deaths; Forest County with nine cases; Vilas County with four cases; Florence County with two cases; and Iron County, two cases and a death.

Statewide, Wisconsin had recorded 12,543 cases of COVID-19 as of Sunday afternoon, but no new deaths for the entire state, staying at 453.

Dickinson County Healthcare System on Sunday still listed three county residents testing positive at its facilities thus far, with two deaths, along with five positives from other counties; those counties were not identified. DCHS had tested 410 people for COVID-19, with eight positive, 392 negative and 10 results still pending. DCHS noted there are several additional sources of testing in Dickinson County.

The Dickinson-Iron District Health Department today reported five positive cases, 507 negative tests and 11 tests pending among 523 done so far in Dickinson County; Iron County still has no positives, 403 negative tests and 14 pending among 417 administered, according to the DIDHD’s Facebook page.
