MHSAA delays high school football to spring

The 2020 high school football season in Michigan is being shifted to spring 2021, the Michigan High School Athletic Association announced today.

All other fall sports will proceed as scheduled.

The MHSAA’s council in East Lansing made the decision based on football’s higher risk for spreading COVID-19 because of its level of player-to-player contact, according to the MHSAA news release today.

The football season switch was made in consultation with state health department officials and after surveying MHSAA member high schools on their progress and preferences after the first four days of practice.

More than 34,200 student-athletes played football at MHSAA-member schools during the 2019 season. A total of 520 11-player teams and 83 eight-player teams were anticipated to play football this fall season.

In the U.P., other fall sports are boys soccer, girls tennis and volleyball.
