Houghton, Marquette counties lead UP in new cases

The counties with the two largest universities in the Upper Peninsula accounted for the biggest gains Thursday in number of new COVID-19 positives, according to figures from state and regional health officials.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services’ data site Thursday had 10 more confirmed cases in Houghton County and nine more in Marquette County.

The Western Upper Peninsula Health Department on its website listed 89 positives for Houghton County as of Thursday, eight more than the state’s total. In addition, the WUPHD had three more cases in Keweenaw County and one more in Gogebic County than shown in state data.

Public Health of Delta and Menominee Counties has 229 positives as of Thursday in Menominee County, two more than the state’s tally and still the highest for the Upper Peninsula.

Michigan’s COVID-19 data site Thursday also listed three new positives in Delta County; two in Menominee, Chippewa and Ontonagon counties; and one each in Dickinson, Iron and Mackinac counties.

In Wisconsin, the Forest County Health Department on Facebook reported 12 new cases Thursday to reach 95, with one person hospitalized and 21 still in isolation. Another 19 test results are pending.

On the Wisconsin side of the region, that state’s COVID-19 data site Thursday indicated six new positives in Vilas County; two in Marinette, Forest and Iron counties; and one in Florence County.

For the Upper Peninsula, the MDHHS data site Thursday had Keweenaw County with two confirmed cases; Luce County, five confirmed cases; Baraga County, six confirmed cases and two probable; Schoolcraft County, 14 confirmed cases and one probable; Alger County, 16 confirmed and one probable; Mackinac County, 30 confirmed cases and eight probable; Iron County, 34 confirmed cases, two probable and one death; Ontonagon County, 35 confirmed and one probable; Chippewa County, 43 confirmed cases and 22 probable; Dickinson County, 66 confirmed cases, one probable and two deaths; Houghton County, 81 confirmed cases, 14 probable and one death; Gogebic County, 134 confirmed cases, 10 probable and a death; Delta County, 143 confirmed cases, 26 probable and three deaths; Marquette County, 221 confirmed cases, 41 probable and 11 deaths; and Menominee County, 227 confirmed cases and 31 probable. State numbers are updated daily but can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services also earlier separately had prison inmates who were positive in Luce and Chippewa counties.

Using only the state figures Thursday, the Upper Peninsula has had 1,059 confirmed COVID-19 cases to date with 19 deaths.

The MDHSS reported 685 confirmed new COVID-19 cases in Michigan on Thursday for a total of 104,395 to date. The state added 10 new deaths Thursday — including nine that happened earlier but recently were verified through vital records and testing, according to the MDHHS — for a total of 6,519.

For Wisconsin counties in the region, the state Department of Health Services’ COVID-19 data site Thursday had Marinette County with 620 confirmed cases, 18 probable cases and six deaths; Iron County,128 confirmed, five probable and one death; Vilas County, 120 confirmed and two probable; Forest County, 83 confirmed, two probable and four deaths; and Florence County, 28 confirmed. As with the Michigan data, the state numbers are updated daily but can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

Wisconsin recorded 727 new positives in the state Thursday for a total of 77,856 to date, according to the state DHS data site. The state had four new COVID-19 deaths Thursday for a total of 1,146.

According to the Dickinson-Iron District Health Department, Dickinson County as of Thursday has had 68 confirmed COVID-19 positives and one probable case, with 51 recovered, two deaths and 16 cases still active. Iron County has had 33 confirmed positives and two probable, with 16 recovered, one death and 18 still active.

Dickinson County Healthcare System as of Wednesday showed 19 cases from Dickinson County and 36 cases from other counties; those counties are not identified. DCHS has tested 3,204 people for COVID-19, with 55 positive, 3,087 negative and 62 results still pending. DCHS noted there are several additional sources of testing in Dickinson County.
