Michigan, Wisconsin post one-day records for new COVID cases

Dickinson County led Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in new COVID-19 cases on the state’s data site Tuesday, while Marquette County overtook Delta County in the overall number of positives so far in the U.P.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services’ numbers Tuesday indicated 294 confirmed new positives across the Upper Peninsula’s 15 counties: 95 in Dickinson County, 77 in Marquette County, 41 in Menominee County, 25 in Delta County, 13 in Baraga County, nine in Iron County, seven in Houghton and Chippewa counties, six in Gogebic County, five in Ontonagon County, three in Luce County, two in Alger and Mackinac counties, and one in Keweenaw and Schoolcraft counties. The state also showed new deaths in Menominee, Gogebic and Ontonagon counties.

In total for the U.P., the MDHHS COVID-19 data site Tuesday had Keweenaw County with 28 confirmed cases and one probable, and one death; Luce County, 83 confirmed cases and 36 probable; Alger County, 114 confirmed, 40 probable and one death; Schoolcraft County, 127 confirmed cases and five probable, plus one probable death; Mackinac County, 152 confirmed cases and 41 probable; Chippewa County, 175 confirmed cases and 194 probable; Baraga County, 189 confirmed cases, 31 probable and four deaths; Ontonagon County, 195 confirmed, 22 probable and two deaths; Gogebic County, 421 confirmed cases and 161 probable, seven confirmed deaths and 10 probable deaths; Iron County, 541 confirmed cases and 33 probable, 24 confirmed deaths and four probable; Menominee County, 875 confirmed cases, 87 probable and eight deaths; Houghton County, 952 confirmed cases, 194 probable, eight confirmed deaths and one probable; Dickinson County, 1,031 confirmed cases and 29 probable, 25 confirmed deaths and two probable; Delta County, 1,596 confirmed cases and 177 probable, 42 confirmed deaths and eight probable; and Marquette County, 1,612 confirmed cases, 191 probable and 19 deaths. State numbers are updated daily but can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

Using only the state figures, the Upper Peninsula has had 8,091 confirmed COVID-19 cases to date and 141 deaths.

The MDHHS reported 6,473 confirmed new COVID-19 cases in Michigan on Tuesday — a new one-day record for the state — for a total of 223,277 to date. The state added 84 new deaths Tuesday — including 25 that happened earlier but recently were verified through vital records and testing, according to the MDHHS — for a total of 7,724. It was the state’s deadliest day in six months, according to the Associated Press.

The Dickinson-Iron District Health Department at 4 p.m. Tuesday reported a new death in Iron County along with nine new positives. Dickinson County had 16 new cases.

The Dickinson-Iron District Health Department on Tuesday listed Dickinson County at 1,064 confirmed positives and 63 probable cases, with 360 recovered, 25 deaths and 742 cases still active. Iron County has had 545 confirmed cases and 35 probables, with 303 recovered, 26 deaths and 251 cases still active.

For Wisconsin counties in the region, that state’s COVID-19 data site Tuesday had 17 new cases in Forest and Vilas counties, 27 in Marinette County, eight in Iron County and five in Florence County. The state listed a new death in Marinette County as well.

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services on Tuesday had Marinette County with 2,242 confirmed cases, 168 probable cases and 20 deaths; Vilas County, 847 confirmed, 22 probable and eight deaths; Forest County, 599 confirmed, 36 probable and 11 deaths; Iron County, 274 confirmed, 51 probable and five deaths, one probable; and Florence County, 258 confirmed, 14 probable and eight deaths. As with the Michigan data, the state numbers are updated daily but can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

Wisconsin had 7,073 new positives Tuesday for a total of 278,843. The state added 66 new COVID-19 deaths Tuesday to reach 2,395. Both were new single-day records for the state.
