Storm spotter training webinars in April

GREEN BAY, Wis. — The National Weather Service-Green Bay is again conducting Storm Spotter/SKYWARN trainings via webinars during the month of April. Storm Spotters are volunteers who help their community and NOAA’s National Weather Service by keeping an “eye on the sky” during severe weather.

Attendees will learn about cloud formation, severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, and reporting procedures. First responders (fire, rescue, law enforcement, amateur radio, etc.) and the general public are invited to attend. You must be over 15 years of age to be a spotter. There is no charge for the class; however, since it is a webinar it will use data from your internet plan.

There will be eight sessions total: six standard courses and two advanced courses. You only need to attend one session to become a storm spotter. Advanced courses are for weather enthusiasts who want more science. Each session should last approximately 60 to 75 minutes.

The class schedule is as follows:

— Saturday, April 10, at 7 p.m.;

— Monday, April 12, at 10 a.m.;

— Tuesday, April 13, at 7 p.m.;

— Wednesday, April 14, at 11:30 a.m.;

— Thursday, April 15, at 7 p.m., advanced session;

— Tuesday, April 20, at noon, advanced session;

— Thursday, April 22, at 2 p.m.;

— Friday, April 30, at 11 a.m.

The schedule includes daytime, evening, and one Saturday session. For Storm Spotter training dates and to register, you can go to the NWS Green Bay website at http://www.weather.gov/grb/spotterschedule.

The training utilizes the program “GoTo Webinar,” which needs to be downloaded to your computer or install the app on your smartphone. When you register, you’ll be asked for your name and an email address. On the “You’re Registered” screen, click on the join the webinar link where GoTo Webinar is installed.

It’s suggested you do this well ahead of the meeting to ensure the program works correctly. By registering in advance you will be able to receive communications directly for this event such as changes in schedule.
