Niagara names top grads for Class of 2021

NEVADA BROWN

NIAGARA, Wis. — The Niagara School District has announced the top five scholars who led the 30 graduates in its Class of 2021.

They are:

— Nevada Brown, 18, will graduate first in her class. She is the daughter of Paula Vretenar and Mack Brown. She has one sibling, Noah Vretenar.

Brown is an honor student who participated in cheerleading and yearbook and was also a teacher’s aide.

Brown named teachers Ginger Anderson and Megan Lynch as her role models. “They have both pushed me towards a path that will lead to a great future,” she said. “Their tough love made me stand where I am today.”

TY COLENSO

Brown enjoys hiking, shopping and swimming. Her community service includes at the Niagara Senior Center and the high school concession stand. Her work experience includes Burger King as well as Kendra’s Helping Hands Cleaning Service.

Brown plans to pursue a degree in human resources this fall at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College-Marinette.

— Ty Colenso, 18, will graduate second in his class. He is the third child of Jason and Renae Colenso. His siblings are Tristin, Annalise and Aiden Colenso.

Colenso is an honor student who has participated in basketball, baseball, Hi-Q, Academic Bowl and Skills USA. He is the 2021 Forward Financial Credit Union Badger Boy and also placed second the Skills USA regional technical drafting competition.

Colenso named his parents as his role models because they have taught him life lessons.

HALEY ALLRED

Colenso enjoys fishing, basketball, hunting and hanging out with his friends. His community service includes helping with his younger brother’s basketball practice, volunteering at the Lions Club Picnic, fundraising for the service trip and working at the high school concession stand. He is currently employed at Pet Supplies Plus. He is a member of First Presbyterian Church of Kingsford.

Colenso plans to major in finance this fall at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

— Haley Allred, 18, will graduate third in her class. She is the only child of Cory and Jen Allred.

Allred is an honor student who participated in volleyball, basketball, softball, Student Council, Badgers United and Art Club. She is the 2021 Forward Financial Credit Union Badger Girl and also received the Association of Student Artists Award. Allred is a member of the National Honor Society and was chosen as 2020 Miss Niagara.

Allred named her mother as her role model because she has taught her many life lessons and demonstrates good work ethic for her to follow.

JULIA BROWN

Allred enjoys art, sports and camping. Her community service includes a service trip to Philadelphia, helping out at Sunday Basketball, church clean-up and working in the basketball concession stand. Allred works as a babysitter and is a nanny in the summer. She is a member of Riverside United Methodist Church.

Allred plans to pursue a degree in design and graphic technology this fall at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College.

— Julia Brown, 18, will graduate fourth in her class. She is the youngest child of Jay and Darcy Brown. She has one sibling, Cole Brown.

Brown is an honor student who has participated in volleyball, golf, softball, forensic public speaking, Student Council and Badgers United. She was the 2019 Miss Niagara, has been a class officer for four years and is a two-year member of the National Honor Society. Brown is a three-time varsity letter winner in volleyball and has also earned a varsity letter in softball and golf. She was chosen as most improved player in both volleyball and golf. Brown is the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen recipient and the American Legion Good Citizen for 2021. She has also earned the Dickinson-Iron Intermediate School District Technical Education Center Student of the Semester for health occupations and was chosen as an American Legion Auxiliary Badger Girls State delegate.

Brown named her grandparents as her role models because they have always supported her no matter what she does. Both sets of her grandparents always have a positive attitude and positive outlook on life; they have inspired her to be the person she is today.

CHARLES SWANSON

Brown enjoys spending time with family and friends, being outside, doing yoga and attending concerts. Her community service includes volunteering at the Lions Club Picnic and the Big Red Barn and also delivering a speech for Memorial Day for the past six years. Brown works at the Radiant Natural Health Clinic and Annie’s T&T and also as a youth leader for Food, Fun, and Fitness. She is a member of St. Mary & St. Joseph Catholic Church.

She plans to attend Northern Michigan University this fall.

— Charles Swanson, 17, will graduate fifth is his class. He is the oldest child of Jeff and Lisa Swanson. His siblings are Edward and Sydney Swanson.

Swanson is an honor student who has participated in basketball and football. He has received three varsity letters in basketball and has consistently been on the high honors honor roll.

Swanson named his parents as his role models, as they have taught him a lot over the years.

Swanson enjoys playing basketball and hanging out with friends. His community service includes volunteering as a youth basketball assistant coach and working at the high school concession stand. He is employed at Pet Supplies Plus. He is a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Kingsford.

Swanson plans to pursue a degree as a physical education and health instructor this fall at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Niagara High School will have its graduation ceremonies at 6 p.m. today in the high school gymnasium.
