IM prepares to accept green burials
IRON MOUNTAIN — An area for green burials at Iron Mountain Cemetery Park has been identified, with rules and regulations to be considered at a future meeting of the city council.
The area near Jackson/Campbell Street in a southeast section of the cemetery has room for about 60 graves, according to City Manager Jordan Stanchina.
The city researched the green burial concept after a community presentation in 2019 by the Keweenaw Green Burial Alliance. The burials do not allow for headstones or burial vaults. The grave site is allowed to return to nature through use of a biodegradable coffin or shroud.
The burial policy could be ready for consideration by Nov. 1, Stanchina told the council Oct. 16.
In other action, the council:
— Learned that a purchase agreement has been signed for Kwik Trip Inc.’s acquisition of a city parcel at 1010 N. Stephenson Ave. The sale of 2.8 acres for $315,000 is for construction of a fuel/convenience store.
— Heard resident Katherine Clawson praise the Iron Mountain Fire Department for its assistance on a recent ambulance call. “The police and fire departments have always done a marvelous job,” she said. “We’re very fortunate to have the caliber of officers and first responders that we have.”
— Received a report of just seven deer harvested as of Oct. 18 during the city’s managed archery hunt. Mayor Dale Alessandrini said he recently counted “a herd of 14” on a residential corner.
— Noted the city will begin using a Facebook page to help notify residents about public works activities and other items of interest. A link is available at https://www.cityofironmountain.com/.
