Homeless count

The Salvation Army Bread of Life Assistance Center of Kingsford and its volunteers braved the elements Wednesday evening to conduct this year’s Point-in-Time count. Each year, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development requires a census of the homeless population in every county. The Salvation Army is in charge of the count for Dickinson and Iron counties. Salvation Army Case Manager Jennifer Witte, right, and Salvation Army Director Tara Blagec searched for individuals who are homeless on Millie Hill in Iron Mountain. They investigated fresh footprints, looked for tarps or any kind of temporary structure and yelled out “Salvation Army.” There is a seven-day window from Jan. 26 in which data can be added.
