Burgoon, Colavecchi Heisman nominees at IMHS

IRON MOUNTAIN — Iron Mountain High School seniors, Aziza Burgoon and Joseph Colavecchi have been named Iron Mountain High School winners for the 2022 High School Heisman Award program.

Burgoon is the daughter of Paul and Foz Burgoon of Iron Mountain. While at Iron Mountain High School, she has participated in Key Club, Varsity Club and student council, where she served as vice president this year. She was one of the inaugural members of the be nice. student ambassador team, which introduced the be nice. mental health and anti-bullying program at Iron Mountain Public Schools. She currently is co-chair of be nice.

Burgoon has also participated all four years of high school with the Tri-Hi-Y women’s club.

Her passion for sports is evident, as she has played travel hockey and tennis all four years of high school, as well as participating in varsity soccer for three years, the last year as captain. Burgoon was a state champion in girls hockey her freshman year and was a national champion qualifier in girls hockey her freshman and sophomore year.

In tennis, she made both the U.P. Finals and Midpen finals her junior and senior year in singles two. In addition to being a successful athlete, she has maintained a 4.0 grade-point average throughout high school, and received the Michigan Technological Society of Women Engineers Certificate of Merit her junior year for excellence in math and science. She has earned a place on the IMHS Honor Roll every year and has been a member of the National Honor Society for the past three years.

Burgoon has achieved her accomplishments while volunteering in her community with many projects, including serving as the team manager for the Kingsford/Iron Mountain High School hockey team, teaching younger students to skate at the rink and working at the YMCA.

Colavecchi is the son of Kevin Colavecchi of Iron Mountain and Candice Faust of Felch Township. He has participated in Key Club and varsity club all four years of high school. He has earned a spot on the honor roll all four years of high school, and has been on the National Honor Society for three years. Colavecchi’s love of sports shines through. He has played varsity golf and track all four years of high school. He currently holds the school record in the 4×10 relay and was the Westpac Men’s Track Conference Athlete of the Year his sophomore year. He has also played basketball and football all four years of high school, and has played on the varsity teams of both sports for the past three years.

He assisted the basketball team to become state runner-up his sophomore year and helped the football team become district runner-up last year. Joseph has accomplished these achievements while working for Bacco as part of the co-op program and during the summer, as well as volunteering his time throughout the community.
