IRON MOUNTAIN — Get A Cab will provide free rides to the polls on election day Tuesday so a lack of a vehicle doesn’t stop anyone from voting.

T.J. McCarthy of Get A Cab said he has many regular customers who rely on his drivers almost daily to get to work, stores or doctor appointments. They told him they could not afford another $10 or more for a trip to the polls.

“My boss (John Grier) and I were talking and I said the one thing I am hearing is people cannot get out and vote and he said, ‘What would you think about doing free rides on election day?'” McCarthy said. “It is our way of giving back to the community a little bit. It is an important time to show a little bit of generosity.”

McCarthy said that it took a little bit of rearranging vehicles and driver schedules, but Get A Cab will be able to offer the rides without sacrificing service to other customers. On election day, Get A Cab plans on having one car dedicated just for rides to the polls and they will put more on duty if needed.

It’s not just Iron Mountain or Kingsford, either. Get A Cab will take any voter to any election polling place from Norway to Florence, Wis. The only restriction is the ride is direct to the polls and back — no stops in between.

“This election is important. Whatever way you vote, it is important to go out and vote,” McCarthy said. “Many people do not have transportation, especially the older demographic. I hear them say they cannot get out and vote. Well now you can — we will come and take you with no obligation, just a free ride.”

Get A Cab has seven cars and operates in Iron Mountain, Escanaba and the Menominee/Marinette, Wis., areas. They are licensed in Michigan and Wisconsin.

Those needing a ride on election day or any other time should call 866-438-2222.

Starting at $2.99/week.
