JOSEPH MASSIE

IRON MOUNTAIN — Joseph M. “Joe” Massie, 85, of Vancouver, Wash. and formerly of Quinnesec, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017, at his home, with family by his side.

Joe was born on Dec. 15, 1931, in Quinnesec, son of the late Rufus and Theresa (Ciochetto) Massie. He was raised in Quinnesec and at the age of 18 he joined the Michigan National Guard, serving 33 years with the guard.

Joe graduated from Kingsford High School in 1951, and was a lifelong resident of the area. He started his career with Cleveland Cliffs working underground at the mine in Ishpeming for five years.

In 1959, he went to work for M.A. Hanna Mining Co. at the open pit mine in Randville where he was employed for the next 22 years, retiring in 1982 when the mine closed.

Joe married Gloria (Siegrist) Larsen on May 31, 1980, at the United Methodist Church in Quinnesec. He was a past member of the Golden K and the Jaycees.

Joe loved writing and over a nine year period he wrote the book, “A Quinnesec Kid, His Life and Times,” which was published in 2010. He had a deep Christian faith. Joe was an avid outdoors man and also enjoyed woodworking, playing bocce ball, gardening, bird watching, going to the gym, watching sports and traveling to see family in Washington and Florida. He will be sadly missed by family and friends.

Joe is survived by his wife of 36 years, Gloria; two daughters, Ann (Massie) White of Green Bay, Wis. and Elisabeth (Massie) Scott of Portland, Ore.; four sons, Michael Massie of Niagara, Kevin Massie of Green Bay, Kirk Larsen of Camas, Wash. and Clinton Larsen of Orlando, Fla.; a brother, Phil (Janet) Massie of Quinnesec; seven grandchildren, David White; Tyler, Brenna, Tara, Megan, and Erin Larsen and Ava Gloria Scott; one great-grandchild, Jakoby White; two brothers-in-law, Alan and Roger Siegrist; a sister-in-law, Roseann Neuhard; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by two sisters, Gloria Soderberg and RoseMary Cooper.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, July 8, from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home.

A memorial service will follow Saturday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Rev. James Danielson will officiate.

Burial will be in the Quinnesec Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in his memory.
