CORNELIUS VAN BEEK

IRON MOUNTAIN — Cornelius Van Beek, 97, of Iron Mountain, formerly of Waupun, Wis., passed away Friday, May 26, 2017, at the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain.

Cornelius was born on Aug. 16, 1919, in Tripoli, Wis., the son of the late Garrett and Lena (Jansen) Van Beek. He joined the United States Army during World War II and served in Europe as a medic under General Douglas Patten.

Cornelius married Monona Bjurman on May 28, 1942, at Fort Leonardwood, Mo. Following his honorable discharge from the army, he went to work for the Waupun State Penitentiary. Cornelius was a psychiatric officer in the psychiatric unit of the prison for many years, retiring in 1975.

During his working years, the family enjoyed spending weekends and holidays at their cottage on beautiful Shell Lake in Shell Lake, Wis. He and Monona raised their family in Waupun and in their younger years enjoyed sailing, bowling and were avid golfers.

In addition to his parents, Cornelius was preceded in death by his wife, Monona on Dec. 4, 2013; his son, Richard; and three brothers, Adolph, John and Garrett Van Beek.

He is survived by his children, Steve (Linda) Van Beek of Breitung Township, Ronald (Andrea) Van Beek of Gastonia, N.C. and Scott Van Beek of Elk Horn, Wis.; a daughter-in-law, Carlene Van Beek of Appleton, Wis.; nine grandchildren, Craig (Joanne Uren) Van Beek, Troy (Amy) Van Beek, Tiffany Van Beek, Robert (Sheri) Van Beek, Angela (Chris) Turner, Matthew (Bethany) Van Beek, Eric (Liza) Van Beek, Dylan Van Beek and Christy Van Beek; 12 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Saturday June 3, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain.

Memorial services will follow Saturday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Rev. Lee Liverance will officiate.

Burial will be in the Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Spooner, Wis.

The family would like to thank the doctors and staff at the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain for their exceptional care.
