MARJORIE J. CARPENTER

PORTAGE, Wis. — Marjorie J. Carpenter, 85, of Portage, formerly of Niagara, Wis., passed away on Thursday, Sept. 21, 2017, at Tivoli Nursing Home in Portage.

She was born Nov. 2, 1931, in Carthage, N.Y., daughter of the late William and Mary (Corcoran) McGarry. Marge attended Immaculate Heart Academy in Watertown, N.Y., graduating in 1949, and then completed two years of college.

She married William “Bill” Carpenter on Dec. 13, 1952, at Holy Family Church in Watertown. He preceded her in death on May 17, 2009.

Marge was a former member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Marquette and American Martyrs Catholic Church in Kingsford.

She was a dedicated volunteer for St. Vincent de Paul in Marquette and the Dickinson County Cancer Unit in Kingsford.

Marge enjoyed camping, reading, and spending time with family and friends.

She is survived by six children, Joy (Steve) Pfeffer of Verona, Wis., Mike (Kris) Carpenter of Niagara, Amy Carpenter of Green Bay, Wis., Peter (Tracey) Carpenter of St. Joseph, Mich., Dave Carpenter of Portage, and Steve (Sherry) Carpenter of Reedsburg, Wis.; one brother, William (Margaret) McGarry of Watertown; 13 grandchildren, Heather (Adam) LaFave, Kelly (Kurt) Stumbris, Katie (Nate) Wotruba, Maggie Carpenter, Ben, Emma, Abby and Matthew Carpenter, Sean and Meaghan Carpenter, Toni Carter, and Tony and Kurt Neuens; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Carpenter; a grandson, Patrick Pfeffer; and a sister, Frances Plumpton.

Private family services will be held with Fr. Joseph Gouin officiating.

Burial will be in the Niagara Cemetery, Niagara.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Marge’s memory to the Dickinson County Cancer Unit Loan Closet.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt “thank you” to the staff at Tivoli (Divine Savior Healthcare) in Portage for taking such great care of Marge during her time there.
