Charles L. Wiegand Sr.

CHARLES L. WIEGAND SR.

IRON RIVER — Charles L. Wiegand Sr., 88, of Iron River, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2018, at the Iron County Medical Care Facility in Crystal Falls.

On April 3, 1929, he was born in Warren, Mich., the son of the late Frank J. and Cyrilla C. (Hertz) Wiegand Sr. He attended the St. Clement Schools in Warren, graduating with the Class of 1947.

Charles married Norma Gietzen on May 30, 1950, at Holy Name Catholic Church in Detroit. The couple made their home in Sterling Heights before relocating to Iron River in 1971. They celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary in 2006 and Norma preceded him in death on Feb. 16, 2007.

Charles was self-employed as a builder for more than 50 years, teaching his sons in the building trades. While in Sterling Heights, he and his wife and family started and operated a nursery and landscaping business.

He was an active member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of Watersmeet.

He enjoyed bicycle riding, gardening, playing his violin and inventing.

Charles is survived by his 14 children, Charles (Traci) Wiegand Jr. of Iron River, Barbara (Donald) Nicholson of Iron Mountain, Lawrence (Patricia) Wiegand of Iron River, Karen (Keith) Stebbins of Iron River, Suzanne (Ronald) Dick of Howell, Mich., Marie (Jeff) Rivers of Chisago City, Minn., Anne (Mike) Wolfe of Chippewa Falls, Wis., Rosalie Wiegand of Harbor Springs, Mich., Mark (Jackie) Wiegand of Iron River, Theresa (Daniel) Tomasoski of Eagle River, Wis., Steven (Kathy) Wiegand of Caspian, Sharon Wiegand of DeWitt, Mich., Juanita (Bill) Martin of Midland, Mich., and Vincent (Chara) Wiegand of Iron River.

He is also survived by his 57 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Denise Wiegand of Southfield, Mich.

In addition to his parents and his wife, Charles was preceded in death by a son, Anthony; grandson, Timothy; brothers, Frank Jr., Jerome and Edwin Wiegand; and sisters, Arlene Drain, Bernice Busch, Virginia Campbell, and Ruth Wiegand.

Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 8 at the Jacobs Funeral Home in Iron River. An additional visitation will be 10 to 10:45 a.m. Friday, March 9 at Immaculate Conception Church of Watersmeet.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, March 9 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Watersmeet, with Fr. Jeffrey Kurtz to Offer the Mass of Christian Burial.

Interment will be in the spring, in Rosehill Cemetery in Beechwood.
