PEMBINE, Wis. — Rodney R. “Rod” Shafer, 83, of Pembine, passed away Monday, March 19, 2018, with his family by his side, at Dickinson County Healthcare System, Iron Mountain.

He was born July 1, 1934, in Niagara, Wis., son of the late Joseph and Captola (Bouche) Shafer. Rod graduated from Pembine High School, Class of 1952. He was married to Shirley Groleski on Oct. 23, 1954, in Goodman, Wis. Rod worked at the Niagara Paper Mill and also owned and operated Shafer Electric until recently.

Rod enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golf. He especially enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was a member of St. Margaret Catholic Church in Pembine, was a founding member of the Pembine Rescue Squad and had also been a member of the Pembine Volunteer Fire Department.

Survivors include his loving wife of 63 years, Shirley; one son, John Shafer of Pembine; two daughters, Jean Krenn of Pembine and Mary (Kenny) Thompson of Florida; one brother, Joe Shafer of Pembine; one sister, Susan (Richard) Potthier of Green Bay, Wis.; five grandchildren, Jody Krenn, Amy (Brian) Theuerkauf, Lily (Ben) Christoff, Minde (Alex) Kimell and Jessy Shafer; five great-grandchildren, Cody Hanson, Owen Kimell, and Carl, Caleb and Jack Theuerkauf.

In addition to his parents, Rod was preceded in death by one son, Richard Shafer in 2016; one grandson, Jon Thomas Sederstrom; and one great-granddaughter, Audrey Theuerkauf.

Visitation will be 9:30 to 11 a.m. Friday, March 23 at St. Margaret Church in Pembine. A memorial Mass will follow at 11 a.m. Friday at the church.

Rev. Fr. Matt Settle will officiate.

Burial will take place in Pembine Cemetery in the spring.
