John E. Trottier

IRON RIVER — John E. Trottier, 100, of Iron River, passed away on Monday, Sept. 17, 2018, at the Iron River Care Center.

John was born on Sept. 29, 1917, in Norway, son of the late Henry and Laura (Trepanier) Trottier. He was raised in Iron Mountain and attended Iron Mountain Schools, graduating in 1937.

John was a proud United States Navy Veteran, having served during World War II from 1942 to 1946. He was stationed in the American Theater, aboard the USS LST-7 in the European, African and Middle Eastern Theater, earning four bronze battle stars; and aboard the USS Thuban (AKA-19) in the Asiatic Pacific Theaters, earning one bronze battle star. He was also the recipient of the World War II Victory Medal and a Navy Unit Commendation.

John married the former Agnes Pearl Tikalsky on Nov. 22, 1947, in Iron Mountain. The couple moved to Iron River in 1949. They celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary in 2001. Agnes preceded him in death on Dec. 10 of that year.

He was employed as a truck driver and salesman for Chalmers & Co. in Iron Mountain, then as a supervisor for the Conoco Oil Company, retiring in June 1985 after 20 years. After his retirement, John worked for Bigari Ace Hardware and the Jacobs Funeral Home, both of Iron River.

He was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, camping and going to his hunting camp.

John was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church of Iron River and a former member of the Assumption Church in Iron River. He was 70-year member of the American Legion Alfred Branchini Post 17 of Iron River, where he served as Adjutant.

John is survived by his sons, William (Geraldine) Trottier of Yorktown, Va., and Henry (Caroline) Trottier of Escanaba; daughter, Darlene (Richard) Anderson of Iron River; grandchildren, Nancy King, Janet Blanchard, James Anderson, Dana Waara, Tabitha Brunette and Henry Trottier; 18 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and friends.

In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by his grandson, John Trottier; great-grandson, Ryan Anderson; brothers, Henry, Alfred and Donald Trottier; sisters, Marian Trottier and Marie Cain; and special friend, June Risberg.

Visitation will be 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. Friday, Sept. 21 at the Jacobs Funeral Home of Iron River. Funeral service will follow at 11 a.m., with Rev. Gregory Veneklase to officiate.

Interment will be in Stambaugh Cemetery, Iron River.

The West Side Veterans will accord Military Rites at the graveside.
