IRON MOUNTAIN – Howard J. Mondloch, 88, of Daggett, peacefully passed away on Friday, Dec. 28, surrounded by family at his new home in Iron Mountain.

He was born May 2, 1930, in St. Martin, Minn., son of the late Peter and Susan (Thelen) Mondloch. Howard graduated from St. Cloud Technical High School and went on to earn his bachelor’s degree at St. Cloud State University. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War, serving aboard the hospital ship USS Consolation.

Howard married Ruth Ann Wicke on Aug. 27, 1960, at St. Mary’s Cathedral in St. Cloud, Minn. He retired as the director of religious education for Precious Blood Church in Stephenson.

Howard was a talented writer and artist and created many catechetical writings and highly detailed religious icons. He loved music and played many instruments including the banjo, guitar, harmonica and concertina. Howard was a devout Catholic and always made time for daily prayer. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and will be greatly missed.

He is survived by Ruth, his wife of 58 years; 13 children and their spouses: Michael, Carolyn, Elizabeth, Peter, John, Suzanne, Stephen, Sarah, Timothy, Catherine, Teresa, David and Daniel, as well as Sara, a niece and honorary daughter; 31 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren; a brother, Oliver Mondloch of Clearwater, Minn.; and a sister, Cathy Derr of West St. Paul, Minn. He will also be missed by many nieces and nephews, and dear friends.

In addition to his parents, Howard was preceded in death by his sisters, Margaret and Joan.

Visitation will be on Thursday, Jan. 3, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. Funeral services will be on Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Kingsford. The Rev. Michael Woempner and the Rev. Corey Litzner will concelebrate the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will be in the Quinnesec Cemetery.

The Uren-Cooper-Johnson American Legion Post 50 will conduct military graveside honors.
