IRON MOUNTAIN — Frank S. McKinnon, 95, of Iron Mountain, passed away Monday, Aug. 19, 2019, at the Pinecrest Medical Care Center in Powers.

He was born March 29, 1924, in Echo Bay, Ontario, son of the late Hugh and Sarah McKinnon.

Frank attended Iron Mountain High School where he excelled in basketball, pole vault and golf, once stating: “Athletics is the soul of my existence.”

After graduating from IMHS with the Class of 1942, he joined the United States Navy during WWII, serving from 1942-1948 and again when he was recalled in 1950. He married Louise Wonders of Quinnesec on June 23, 1951, in Milwaukee. She preceded him in death on May 21, 2010.

Frank was employed at Wittock Supply Co. for many years and retired as general manager in 1980.

He carried his nickname “Hunka” by his close friends for most of his life.

He was a member of Pine Grove Country Club, the VFW, the Chippewa Club, the Elks Club and St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Frank was a gentleman in the truest sense of the word who loved people, sports and the outdoors. He took enormous pleasure from showing kindness to family, friends, neighbors and strangers and will be dearly missed by all of those who were fortunate enough to have been a part of his life.

He is survived by his son, Mark (Diane) McKinnon of Iron Mountain; son-in-law, Robert Wolf of Chicago; grandchildren, Brad McKinnon, Tyler (Ashley) McKinnon, Christopher (Erin) Wolf and Courtney (Jeff) Marrone; 13 great-grandchildren, Marleigh, Maggie, Maddie, Rosie, Boone, Julianne, Lake and Willow McKinnon, Casey and Connor Wolf, Annabel, Avery, and Matt Marrone; and his special friend and dancing partner, Dee Pierce.

In addition to his parents and his wife, Frank was preceded in death by a daughter, Candace Wolf; a brother, Roy McKinnon; and his lifelong best friend, Lloyd “Bunzie” Rahoi.

Visitation will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 26 at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.

Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. at St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Iron Mountain. Fr. Janusz Romanek will offer the Mass of Christian Burial.

Burial will be in the Quinnesec Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in his memory.
