IRON MOUNTAIN — Sonja K. Johnson, 76, of Iron Mountain, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 22, 2019, at ManorCare Health Services in Kingsford.

She was born Oct. 6, 1942, in Iron Mountain, daughter of the late Ralph and Sigrid (Hansen) Thorsen.

Sonja graduated from Kingsford High School in 1960 and was a lifelong resident of the area. She married Norman Johnson on Aug. 17, 1963, at Immanuel Baptist Church.

Sonja had a strong faith and was a very active member of Redemption Hill in Kingsford, where she sang in the choir, was involved in the Nursing Home Ministry and was a Sunday school teacher and AWANA Leader. She enjoyed baking, cake decorating and needlework, especially sewing and cross-stitch. Sonja loved reading and was frequently found reading her Bible. Her caring demeanor naturally resonated into serving her family and others. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She will be sadly missed.

Sonja is survived by her husband of 56 years, Norm Johnson; her two sons, Dr. Eric Johnson (Dr. Laura Holcomb) of Oakland, Maine, and Aaron (Cari) Johnson of Ironton, Minn.; a daughter, Sonya (Jon) Edlund of Norway; four sisters, Gail Thorsen and Vikki Stephen, both of Maryland, Cindy (Denny) Lyons of Texas and Darlene Thorsen of Colorado; a brother-in-law, Dr. Sidney (Gloria) Johnson; two sisters-in-law, Lorraine Erickson and Ruth Ann (Frank) Oczus; eight grandchildren, Cody (Wendy) Johnson, Michaella Johnson, Kyanna Johnson, Sienna-Rae Johnson, Jonathan Edlund, Andrew Edlund (fianceé, Ibiye Amachree), Zachary Edlund (fianceé, Lisa Hoekwater), and Bethany Edlund; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her father and mother-in-law, Eddie and Frances Johnson; a brother-in-law, Jim Erickson; and two nieces, Jane Schleip and Kara Anderson.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29 at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain; and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 30 at Redemption Hill in Kingsford.

Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. on Friday at the church.

Rev. Ronald Wolfe will officiate.

Burial will be in the Quinnesec Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Redemption Hill.
