Betty Berklund

KINGSFORD — Betty Berklund, 85, of Kingsford, passed away Oct. 25, 2019, at Seasons Hospice in Naperville, Ill. She was born Sept. 30, 1934, in Ladysmith, Wis., daughter of the late Amzi and Nina (Swoverland) Hadden. In 1956 she married Ted Berklund of Fence, Wis., where they would live the next 11 years.

Between 1957 and 1968, Betty taught in public schools at Goodman, Florence, and Jefferson in Wisconsin – business subjects, high-school English, and elementary music.

In 1972, she and her husband Ted, along with their two children, went to France and Switzerland to study the French language in preparation for serving as missionaries in Africa for the next 18 years. They returned to the U.S. in 1990.

Betty was a member of the Christian Women’s Club. She volunteered at the Caring House domestic violence shelter for 11 years and as a chaplain for women at the Dickinson County Correctional Facility for 13 years. She also served at Camp New Day summer Bible camps, a special camp for children of prisoners, as camp chaplain for four successive summers.

Betty is survived by her husband, Ted; two children, Howard Berklund (Lori) of Oswego, Ill., and Kathy (Ron) Pagé of Montreal, Canada; three grandchildren, Sonia, Caleb, and Jordan, all of Canada; one brother, Lloyd Hadden (Dolly) of Ogema, Wis.; twin sisters, Eileen Niedfeldt (Curt) of Oshkosh, Wis., and Donna (Steve) Pestel of Mount Pleasant, Mich.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Donald Hadden.

A service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 2 at the Fence Bible Church in Fence.

Visitation will be at 10:30 a.m., the service will follow at 11:30 a.m.
