Robert Edward Nowicke

FLORENCE, Wis. — Robert Edward Nowicke, 78, of Florence, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2019, at Florence Health Services.

He was born June 12, 1941, in Florence, son of the late Phillip and Rose (Pandora) Nowicke. Bob graduated from Florence High School in 1959.

He went on to proudly serve in the United States Army in the early 1960s, receiving the Good Conduct Medal as a private first class serving in Alaska.

Bob returned to the family farm northwest of Florence where he had grown up, along with his late sister Arletta (Nowicke) Maass and his late brother, Phillip Nowicke Jr. Throughout their lives, Bob and Phil worked on the dairy farm alongside their father and mother. They later turned to logging the property.

Bob’s friends and family remember him as a good-hearted man who took an interest in his neighbors and was generous in assisting them when he could. Even after he and his brother stopped actively logging, Bob would continue taking his vehicles around the property to clear trails, and he maintained several sheds full of equipment and tools.

He was an avid hunter and operated a ham radio system that often kept him up late into the night, talking to people from around the world. He loved animals, especially his many barn cats over the years. Bob and anyone lucky enough to be visiting with him could spend hours looking out the kitchen window, watching the hummingbirds darting around the feeders he put up.

Bob is survived by his two nephews, Alan Maass of Chicago, and Stephen Maass of Wilsonville, Ore.; and by cousins, nieces and nephews who called him “Uncle Bob.”

Friends were like family to him, including his neighbors, Gary Ashe, Allen Sommers, and Tim Engel, as well as many others.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26 at St. Marys Catholic Church, 308 Florence Ave. in Florence.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. at the church, with a reception to follow at the church hall.
