Thomas R. “T.J.” Johnson

IRON MOUNTAIN — Thomas R. “T.J.” Johnson, 64, of Iron Mountain passed away on Friday, Dec. 20, 2019, at Dickinson County Healthcare System in Iron Mountain.

Tom was born Nov. 28, 1955, in Crystal Falls, the son of Robert and Margaret (Miller) Johnson. Tom graduated from North Dickinson High School in 1975 and was a lifelong resident of the area. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy for three years.

A devoted Packer fan, Tom never missed watching a game. He loved fishing, especially trout fishing, and also enjoyed ice fishing. He loved small game and deer hunting. T.J. really enjoyed feeding the deer in his backyard and picking apples for them. He liked playing cribbage and also loved shooting pool, playing for many years on area pool leagues. He was very fond of his cat, Patches.

Tom had many friends and family who will miss him dearly.

T.J. is survived by his fianceé, Shelly Gaffney; two daughters, Sara Sperka of Wausau, Wis., and Jessila Johnson of Marquette; a granddaughter, Sari; Shelly’s son Tommy Rhodd; his parents, Bob and Margaret Johnson of Sagola; a brother, Michael “Red” (Anita) Johnson of Felch; two sisters, Jean Ann (Rob) Whitney of Sagola and Judy (Pat) Steinbrecher of Felch; very good friends Lori Beyers and Denise Martin.

He is further survived by many special cousins, nieces and nephews; and his beloved cat, Patches.

The family would like to thank the extraordinary care provided by the nursing staff in the ICU at Dicksinson County Healthcare System.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 29, at the Grace Presbyterian Church in Sagola. A Memorial Service will follow at 4 p.m. at the church. The Rev. Ryan Flunker will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in his memory.
